Khon Kaen University (KKU) has strengthened its fight against one of Thailand’s most serious public health threats by joining five government agencies in a coordinated campaign to combat liver fluke infection and cholangiocarcinoma, diseases that claim more than 20,000 Thai lives each year. The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Santi Maitri Building, Government House, under the witness of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, signalling strong national support for the “Cholangiocarcinoma-Free Isan” strategy.
On 11 February 2026, Prof. Thidarat Boonmars, KKU’s Vice President for Enterprise and Sustainable Society, represented the university in signing the MoU alongside senior executives from the Department of Provincial Administration and the Department of Local Administration under the Ministry of Interior, as well as the Ministry of Public Health and the Health Systems Research Institute.
The Prime Minister said, “The signing of today’s MoU will lead to concrete outcomes, including a reduction in liver fluke infections, lower illness rates, and a sustained decline in deaths from cholangiocarcinoma.”
During the ceremony, experts from the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute and the Centre of Excellence for Cholangiocarcinoma at the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, led by Assoc. Prof. Watcharin Loilome, director, and Asst. Prof. Attapol Titapun, secretary and senior researcher, presented a “four-pillar strategy” to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The strategy outlines a comprehensive response to the health crisis, focusing on improved sanitation and waste management in high-risk areas to curb transmission, promotion of safe food practices at community level, public campaigns to encourage behavioural change, and strengthened screening and treatment services to ensure at-risk groups receive timely diagnosis and care.
The signing marks another significant step for KKU in advancing efforts to address liver fluke infection and cholangiocarcinoma, a major public health concern in the Northeast and nationwide. Over the years, KKU has positioned itself as a leading medical knowledge and innovation hub, driving initiatives ranging from community awareness campaigns and proactive screening in remote areas to improving diagnostic and treatment standards. The university has also conducted in-depth research into disease mechanisms and risk factors, alongside developing key innovations such as the OV Test Kit, now used in public health services across the country. The latest partnership strengthens coordination with state agencies at both policy and operational levels, with the aim of reducing infection rates and lowering mortality.
Behind the national progress to date stands the legacy of Prof. Narong Khuntikeo, former director of the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute and a pioneer in Thailand’s fight against cholangiocarcinoma, whose dedication laid the foundation for the current campaign. Assoc. Prof. Watcharin Loilome and Asst. Prof. Attapol Titapun, who continue the mission at the Faculty of Medicine, KKU, reaffirmed their commitment to carrying that vision forward. “As the lead institution driving the national strategy on cholangiocarcinoma, we are committed to advancing knowledge and innovation to strengthen disease control and ensure sustainable health outcomes for the Thai people,” they said.

นายกรัฐมนตรีหนุน มข. ผนึก 5 หน่วยงานรัฐ ขับเคลื่อนยุทธศาสตร์ “อีสานปลอดมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี”
มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น (มข.) ตอกย้ำจุดยืน “มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งการอุทิศเพื่อสังคม” รุกคืบแก้ปัญหาสาธารณสุขระดับชาติ เข้าร่วมลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MOU) ครั้งสำคัญ ณ ตึกสันติไมตรี ทำเนียบรัฐบาล เพื่อขับเคลื่อนการแก้ไขปัญหาโรคพยาธิใบไม้ตับและมะเร็งท่อน้ำดีอย่างครบวงจร มุ่งเป้าตัดวงจรโรคร้ายที่คร่าชีวิตคนไทยกว่า 20,000 รายต่อปี โดยมีนายกรัฐมนตรีร่วมเป็นสักขีพยานด้วยความเชื่อมั่นว่า “ประเทศไทยต้องปลอดพยาธิใบไม้ตับและมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี”
เมื่อวันที่ 11 กุมภาพันธ์ 2569 ศ. ดร. ธิดารัตน์ บุญมาศ รองอธิการบดีฝ่ายวิสาหกิจและสังคมยั่งยืน เป็นผู้แทนสถาบันลงนามร่วมกับผู้บริหารระดับสูงจากกรมการปกครอง กรมส่งเสริมการปกครองท้องถิ่นกระทรวงมหาดไทย กระทรวงสาธารณสุข และสถาบันวิจัยระบบสาธารณสุข โดยมี นายอนุทิน ชาญวีรกูล นายกรัฐมนตรีและรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงมหาดไทย ให้เกียรติร่วมเป็นสักขีพยานในพิธี
โดยนายกรัฐมนตรีกล่าวว่า “การร่วมลงนาม MOU ในวันนี้ จะนำไปสู่ผลลัพธ์ที่เป็นรูปธรรม คือการลดการติดเชื้อพยาธิใบไม้ในตับ และ ลดการเจ็บป่วย รวมทั้งการสูญเสียของชีวิตจากโรคมะเร็งท่อน้ำดีในระยะยาว”
ด้านคณะผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากสถาบันวิจัยมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี และศูนย์ความเป็นเลิศมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น นำโดย รศ. ดร. วัชรินทร์ ลอยลม ผู้อำนวยการ และ ผศ. นพ .อรรถพล ติตะปัญ เลขานุการและนักวิจัยอาวุโส ได้นำเสนอ “ยุทธศาสตร์ 4 เสาหลัก” ต่อนายกรัฐมนตรี อนุทิน ชาญวีรกูลซึ่งเป็นหัวใจสำคัญในการรับมือกับวิกฤตสุขภาพนี้อย่างครบวงจร ได้แก่ การยกระดับสุขาภิบาลและการจัดการสิ่งปฏิกูลในพื้นที่เสี่ยงเพื่อลดการแพร่กระจายของเชื้อ การผลักดันแนวทางอาหารปลอดภัยในระดับชุมชน การรณรงค์ปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมสุขภาพของประชาชน และการเสริมความเข้มแข็งของระบบคัดกรองและรักษา เพื่อให้กลุ่มเสี่ยงเข้าถึงการตรวจวินิจฉัยและการดูแลรักษาได้อย่างทันท่วงที
การลงนามความร่วมมือครั้งนี้ถือเป็นอีกก้าวสำคัญของ มข. ในการขับเคลื่อนภารกิจแก้ไขปัญหาโรคพยาธิใบไม้ตับและมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี ซึ่งเป็นปัญหาสาธารณสุขสำคัญของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือและของประเทศ ตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา มข. ขับเคลื่อนก้าวสำคัญสู่การเป็นผู้นำและศูนย์กลางองค์ความรู้ทางการแพทย์ที่ครอบคลุมทุกวงจรนวัตกรรม ตั้งแต่การรณรงค์สร้างความเข้าใจในระดับชุมชน การลงพื้นที่ตรวจคัดกรองเชิงรุกในพื้นที่ห่างไกล การยกระดับมาตรฐานการวินิจฉัยและรักษา ไปจนถึงการวิจัยเชิงลึกเพื่อค้นหากลไกการเกิดโรคและปัจจัยเสี่ยง ควบคู่กับการพัฒนานวัตกรรมสำคัญ เช่น ชุดตรวจคัดกรองการติดเชื้อ (OV Test Kit) ที่ปัจจุบันถูกใช้ในระบบบริการสาธารณสุขทั่วประเทศ ความร่วมมือครั้งนี้จึงเป็นการผนึกกำลังกับภาครัฐเพื่อการขับเคลื่อนเชิงนโยบายและการปฏิบัติ มุ่งลดอัตราป่วยและเสียชีวิตอย่างยั่งยืน
เบื้องหลังความสำเร็จระดับชาติในครั้งนี้ คือแรงขับเคลื่อนที่เกิดจากการสืบสานเจตนารมณ์ ของ ศาสตราจารย์ นพ. ณรงค์ ขันตีแก้ว อดีตผู้อำนวยการสถาบันวิจัยมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี ผู้บุกเบิกและอุทิศตนแรงกล้าในการต่อสู้กับโรคมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี โดย รศ. ดร.วัชรินทร์ ลอยลม และ ผศ. นพ. อรรถพล ติตะปัญ ในฐานะผู้สานต่อพันธกิจ ระบุว่า “ในฐานะสถาบันหลักผู้บุกเบิกและขับเคลื่อนยุทธศาสตร์การแก้ไขปัญหามะเร็งท่อน้ำดี คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. ได้มุ่งเน้นการผสานองค์ความรู้เข้ากับการพัฒนานวัตกรรมทางการแพทย์ เพื่อยกระดับมาตรฐานการป้องกันและรักษาโรคอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ อันจะเป็นรากฐานสำคัญในการสร้างความยั่งยืนทางสุขภาวะให้แก่ประชาชนชาวไทย”
