It is with profound sadness that the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, mourns the passing of Professor Yukifumi Nawa, MD, PhD, an internationally distinguished parasitologist, dedicated educator, and valued member of our academic community.
Professor Nawa was internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities in parasitology and tropical medicine. Throughout his distinguished career, he made pioneering contributions to helminthology, immunoparasitology, host–parasite interactions, and tropical diseases. His outstanding scholarship, scientific leadership, and lifelong commitment to advancing medical science earned him international recognition and numerous prestigious honors, leaving an enduring impact on research, education, and global health.
On 1 April 2011, Professor Nawa joined the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, as an Adjunct Professor. Over the following fifteen years, he made extraordinary contributions to the Faculty’s academic mission, particularly in advancing research excellence in tropical medicine. Through his exceptional expertise, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to scientific integrity, he helped elevate the Faculty’s research standards to international levels while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
Professor Nawa was a passionate mentor who devoted himself to developing future generations of researchers, physicians, and scientists. He generously shared his knowledge with faculty members, postgraduate students, medical students, and young investigators, inspiring them to pursue excellence in research and engage confidently with the international scientific community. His guidance shaped the careers of many researchers whose achievements continue to reflect the values and standards he exemplified.
Believing that scientific progress is strengthened through international collaboration, Professor Nawa played a pivotal role in expanding academic and research partnerships between the Faculty of Medicine and leading universities and research institutions in Japan and across the world. His efforts established enduring institutional relationships, promoted collaborative research and academic exchange, and created valuable opportunities for faculty development and international networking. He also provided invaluable guidance to medical students and postgraduate trainees undertaking academic and research exchanges in Japan, helping broaden their international perspectives and professional development.
Professor Nawa’s commitment to the Faculty extended far beyond research and education. He willingly taught Japanese language and culture to Faculty members and staff, believing that mutual understanding and friendship are essential foundations for meaningful international collaboration. Through his kindness, humility, and generosity, he strengthened the longstanding relationship between Thailand and Japan while enriching the lives of those around him.
Although Professor Nawa returned to Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic, his dedication to the Faculty of Medicine remained unwavering. Despite the geographical distance, he continued to serve as a trusted mentor and advisor, generously providing academic guidance, supporting research initiatives, strengthening international collaborations, and contributing to the Faculty’s continued development. His enduring commitment reflected not only his devotion to academic excellence but also his deep affection for the Faculty and its people.
Beyond his remarkable academic accomplishments, Professor Nawa will be remembered for his warmth, humility, generosity, and genuine friendship. He welcomed colleagues and students into his home with exceptional hospitality, freely shared his knowledge, and offered encouragement with sincerity and compassion. To many members of our Faculty, he was not only a world-renowned scientist but also a respected colleague, trusted mentor, and dear friend.
Professor Nawa’s legacy extends far beyond his distinguished scientific achievements. It lives on through the generations of researchers he mentored, the international collaborations he established, the institutional foundations he helped strengthen, and the enduring culture of academic excellence he helped cultivate within the Faculty of Medicine. His vision, integrity, and dedication have become an enduring part of our institution’s history and will continue to inspire future generations.

คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ขอแสดงความอาลัยอย่างสุดซึ้งต่อการจากไปของ ศาสตราจารย์ ยูกิฟูมิ นาวะ (Professor Yukifumi Nawa, MD, PhD) อาจารย์และนักวิจัยผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการพัฒนาคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ตลอดระยะเวลากว่า 15 ปี
ศาสตราจารย์นาวะเป็นหนึ่งในผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านปรสิตวิทยาและเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อนที่ได้รับการยอมรับในระดับนานาชาติ ผลงานวิจัยของท่านมีส่วนสำคัญในการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านโรคปรสิตและโรคเขตร้อน และได้รับการอ้างอิงอย่างกว้างขวางในวงการวิชาการทั่วโลก
ศาสตราจารย์นาวะได้เริ่มปฏิบัติงานกับคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เมื่อวันที่ 1 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2554 นับแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา ท่านมีส่วนร่วมในการพัฒนางานวิจัยของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ โดยเฉพาะด้านเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน ผ่านการให้คำปรึกษา ถ่ายทอดความรู้และประสบการณ์แก่คณาจารย์ นักวิจัย และนักศึกษา พร้อมทั้งมีส่วนผลักดันให้งานวิจัยของคณะแพทยศาสตร์เป็นที่ยอมรับในระดับสากล
ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ร่วมงานกับคณะแพทยศาสตร์ ศาสตราจารย์นาวะให้คำปรึกษาและถ่ายทอดประสบการณ์ด้านการวิจัยแก่คณาจารย์ นักวิจัย นักศึกษาระดับบัณฑิตศึกษา และนักศึกษาแพทย์อย่างต่อเนื่อง ทั้งด้านการพัฒนางานวิจัย การตีพิมพ์ผลงานวิชาการ และการสร้างเครือข่ายความร่วมมือกับนักวิจัยในต่างประเทศ นักวิจัยจำนวนมากของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ได้รับโอกาสในการพัฒนาศักยภาพและต่อยอดงานวิจัยจากการทำงานร่วมกับท่าน
ศาสตราจารย์นาวะยังมีบทบาทสำคัญในการผลักดันความร่วมมือทางวิชาการและการวิจัยระหว่างคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น กับมหาวิทยาลัยและสถาบันวิจัยในประเทศญี่ปุ่นและนานาประเทศ ความร่วมมือดังกล่าวนำไปสู่การดำเนินโครงการวิจัยร่วม การแลกเปลี่ยนนักวิจัยและนักศึกษา ตลอดจนการพัฒนาศักยภาพของบุคลากรอย่างต่อเนื่อง นอกจากนี้ ท่านยังให้คำแนะนำและดูแลนักศึกษาแพทย์และนักศึกษาระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาของคณะที่เดินทางไปศึกษาและแลกเปลี่ยน ณ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น พร้อมให้คำปรึกษาและความช่วยเหลือแก่นักศึกษาด้วยความเต็มใจเสมอ ทั้งด้านการศึกษา การใช้ชีวิต และการปรับตัวระหว่างศึกษาอยู่ในประเทศญี่ปุ่น
นอกเหนือจากงานวิจัยและการสอน ศาสตราจารย์นาวะยังสอนภาษาญี่ปุ่นและถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นให้แก่บุคลากรของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ เพื่อสนับสนุนการศึกษา การวิจัย และการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวิชาการกับสถาบันในประเทศญี่ปุ่น เมื่อคณาจารย์ บุคลากร และนักศึกษาของคณะเดินทางไปประเทศญี่ปุ่น ท่านมักเปิดบ้านต้อนรับ ให้คำแนะนำ และดูแลด้วยความเอื้อเฟื้อและจริงใจ ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างท่านกับคณะแพทยศาสตร์จึงไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงความร่วมมือทางวิชาการ หากยังพัฒนาเป็นมิตรภาพและความผูกพันที่สืบเนื่องตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา
แม้ศาสตราจารย์นาวะจะเดินทางกลับประเทศญี่ปุ่นในช่วงการแพร่ระบาดของโรคโควิด-19 แต่ท่านยังคงให้คำปรึกษาทางวิชาการ สนับสนุนการพัฒนางานวิจัย และประสานความร่วมมือกับมหาวิทยาลัยและสถาบันวิจัยในประเทศญี่ปุ่นอย่างต่อเนื่อง พร้อมทั้งติดตามความก้าวหน้าของงานวิชาการและงานวิจัยของคณะแพทยศาสตร์อยู่เสมอ แม้จะอยู่ห่างไกล แต่ความผูกพันและความร่วมมือระหว่างท่านกับคณะยังคงดำเนินต่อไปไม่เคยเปลี่ยนแปลง
ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ร่วมงานกับคณะแพทยศาสตร์ ศาสตราจารย์นาวะทำงานเคียงข้างคณาจารย์ นักวิจัย บุคลากร และนักศึกษา ในฐานะอาจารย์ ที่ปรึกษา และเพื่อนร่วมงาน สิ่งที่ท่านร่วมสร้างไว้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการพัฒนางานวิจัย การขยายความร่วมมือกับมหาวิทยาลัยและสถาบันวิจัยในต่างประเทศ หรือการพัฒนานักวิจัยรุ่นใหม่ ยังคงได้รับการสานต่อและต่อยอดมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
