Thailand’s First “Cancer Genome Analysis Asia” Workshop Hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, KKU — Advancing Cancer Genomics Research in Asia

 

On October 29, 2025, the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University (KKU) warmly welcomed a group of distinguished international experts from the “Cancer Genome Analysis Asia” program — a hands-on international training workshop on cancer genome analysis (Cancer Genomics), hosted for the first time in Thailand.
The delegation was received by Assoc. Prof. Thuss Sanguansak, Vice Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, and Dr. Arporn Wangwiwatsin, from the Department of Systems Biosciences and Computational Medicine.

This visit was part of the “Cancer Genome Analysis Asia” Workshop, jointly organized by Wellcome Connecting Science (UK) and Khon Kaen University, with support from the following KKU institutions:

Cancer genome analysis (Cancer Genomics) is a field that studies the genetic information of cancer cells to better understand disease mechanisms and develop more effective personalized treatments — one of the key approaches in modern precision medicine.

The workshop, held from October 26–31, 2025, spanned five days and aimed to strengthen the capacity of Asian scientists in effectively analyzing and interpreting cancer genomic data. Participants engaged in intensive hands-on sessions covering various topics in bioinformatics, including:

  • Quality control of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data
  • Detection of mutations and driver genes
  • Analysis of mutational signatures
  • Identification of structural variants in the genome

This initiative forms part of the Global Training Programme under Wellcome Connecting Science, the learning and training arm of the Wellcome Sanger Institute (UK). The program aims to enable global access to genomics knowledge and its impact on health through international workshops and courses held across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The workshop gathered 29 participants from 10 Asian countries, including India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.

This international collaboration not only enhances cancer research capacity across Asia but also fosters a sustainable scientific network in genomic medicine, reaffirming the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University’s role as a leading hub for global biomedical collaboration and learning.

MDKKU and Taipei Medical University Researchers Target Glutamine Metabolism in the Fight Against Bile Duct Cancer

 

In a cross-border effort to develop targeted therapies for cholangiocarcinoma, a form of bile duct cancer highly prevalent in northeastern Thailand, faculty members from Taipei Medical University have partnered with the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University (MDKKU) to explore the role of glutamine metabolism as a new frontier in cancer treatment. 

On July 4, the Faculty of Medicine at KKU hosted Assoc. Prof. Ching-Feng Chiu and Asst. Prof. Ching-Wen Chang from the Graduate Institute of Metabolism and Obesity Sciences, Taipei Medical University. The delegation met with Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and faculty members including Assoc. Prof. Warachaya Phanphruk, Assistant Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Assoc. Prof. Kanlayanee Sawanyawisuth, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, and Assoc. Prof. Charupong Saengboonmee, Department of Biochemistry to discuss advancing high-impact biomedical research. 

The partnership is centered on metabolism research—particularly how cancer cells rely on glutamine as a key energy source. Both institutions are working to establish a long-term research strategy that connects local clinical challenges with global biomedical innovation.

Investigating Glutamine: A Metabolic Key to Cancer Cell Growth

Assoc. Prof. Ching-Feng Chiu and Asst. Prof. Ching-Wen Chang have been invited to serve as Research Visiting Professors at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, from July 3-12, 2025. During their visit, they are collaborating on a research project titled “Targeting Glutamine Metabolism Pathway for Cholangiocarcinoma Treatment,” coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Charupong Saengboonmee of the Department of Biochemistry. 

The project investigates the glutamine metabolic pathway—an energy source essential for the growth and survival of cancer cells. By using cultured cholangiocarcinoma cells and patient-derived tissue samples, the team aims to assess whether targeting this pathway could form the basis for a more selective and less toxic treatment strategy, compared to traditional methods.

From Bench to Forum: Academic Exchange and Capacity Building

Beyond laboratory research, Assoc. Prof. Ching-Feng Chiu and Asst. Prof. Ching-Wen Chang will contribute as featured speakers at The 19th International Symposium of the Protein Society of Thailand (PST2025), taking place July 7–9 in Khon Kaen. The symposium is organized by the Protein Society of Thailand in collaboration with Khon Kaen University’s Faculties of Medicine, Science, and Associated Medical Sciences. 

Additionally, they will serve as thesis proposal committee members for Ph.D. candidates in Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and will engage in knowledge exchange activities designed to build research capacity among local faculty and students.

A Regional Hub for Translational Research

This initiative affirms MDKKU’s growing role as a regional center for health sciences collaboration in Southeast Asia. By focusing on diseases endemic to Thailand and leveraging cutting-edge molecular approaches, MDKKU continues to attract global partnerships aligned with its mission to deliver meaningful, locally rooted biomedical solutions.

Khon Kaen University Delegation Visits Iga City General Hospital to Explore Academic and Research Collaboration

 

A delegation from Khon Kaen University (KKU), Thailand, led by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of KKU, paid an official visit to Iga City General Hospital in Japan on May 15, 2025. The visit was graciously hosted by Assoc. Prof. Hiroyuki Sakurai, Deputy Director of Iga City General Hospital.

The visit commenced with a courtesy call to the Director of Iga City General Hospital, followed by a fruitful discussion on the feasibility of establishing student and staff exchange programs between the two institutions. Both sides expressed strong interest in developing a sustainable academic partnership that will foster mutual growth in clinical education, medical research, and professional development.

American Students Join Groundbreaking Cholangiocarcinoma Research at Khon Kaen University

 

Two U.S. graduate students have joined a cutting-edge cancer epidemiology program at Thailand’s Khon Kaen University (KKU), spotlighting the university’s growing role in global public health research.

Ms. Sarah Lawler, a Master of Public Health candidate from Boston University, and Ms. Nichcha Subdee, an advanced epidemiology student at Columbia University, have begun a 12-week academic exchange under the prestigious Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations (CEESP) program, funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute. The program runs from 19 May to 8 August 2025.

 

 

Both students are hosted by the Department of Community, Family, and Occupational Medicine at KKU’s Faculty of Medicine and are mentored by Associate Professor Dr. Pattapong Kessomboon, a leading Thai expert in cancer epidemiology.

Their research focuses on cholangiocarcinoma, a rare but devastating bile duct cancer that occurs with striking frequency in northeast Thailand—up to 85 cases per 100,000 people, compared to just 1–2 per 100,000 in most countries.

Ms. Lawler’s project explores a possible link between the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and increased cholangiocarcinoma risk, using electronic medical records. Meanwhile, Ms. Subdee, who previously led research in gastrointestinal diseases in Thailand, applies machine learning techniques (LASSO regression) to develop predictive models for CCA risk factors specific to the northeastern Thai population.

The program allows both students to work alongside Thai experts from research design to data analysis and manuscript preparation for international publication.

Young Researchers from KKU Faculty of Medicine Selected for Prestigious Chinese Scholarships at Zhejiang University

 

Four graduate students from the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University (KKU), under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Jutarop Phetcharaburanin, thesis advisor, have been awarded prestigious scholarships by the Chinese government to participate in international research and academic exchange programs at Zhejiang University (ZJU) in the People’s Republic of China.

All four students have been selected to join the ZJU SDG Global Summer School 2025, and one of them has also been chosen to participate in The Global Research Immersion Program for Young Scientists (GRIPS) 2025 —a highly competitive program supporting the development of future researchers worldwide. The scholarship recipients are:

Japanese and Lao Delegates Explore MDKKU’s Innovative Lawa Model

 

On Monday, 27 January 2025, a distinguished delegation from Japan and Laos visited Khon Kaen Province to study the innovative “Lawa Model”, a community-driven approach to combating liver fluke infection and associated cancer. The delegation included representatives from Shinshu University, Nagano College of Nursing, the National University of Laos, and Champasak Province’s education and health sectors.

 

 

The delegation was led by prominent figures such as Associate Professor Sachi Tomokawa from Shinshu University, Associate Professor Takeshi Akiyama from Nagano College of Nursing, and Dr. Kongsy Chounlamany, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education, National University of Laos. They were joined by provincial and district health and education officials from Champasak Province.

 

 

 

Morning Highlights

The visit began with a briefing at the Khon Kaen Primary Education Service Area Office 2 in Ban Phai District, followed by an in-depth session at Lawa Village’s Health Promoting Hospital (HPH). The hospital director warmly welcomed the delegates before Professor Banchob Sripa presented an overview of liver fluke-related health issues and the pioneering “Lawa Model”. This model integrates disease prevention, health education, animal reservoir and environmental management to tackle liver fluke infections, a significant public health concern in the region.

 

 

At Lawa School, the group observed the “Liver FlukeFree School” program, an educational initiative aimed at fostering health awareness among young students.

 

Immersive Afternoon Experience

In the afternoon, the delegation visited Lawa Lake to experience the practical applications of the Lawa Model. Activities included a live demonstration by village health volunteers on integrated liver fluke control efforts and a showcase of rural northeastern lifestyles.

  • Traditional Fish Catching Demonstration: Local fishermen displayed their fishing techniques.

Cooking Demonstration: Delegates learned how to prepare the popular yet high-risk local dish “Koi Pla”, emphasizing safe cooking practices to prevent liver fluke infection.

  • Animal Reservoir Management: Associate Professor Sirikachorn Tangkawattana from Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine explained measures to manage animal hosts in the transmission cycle of liver flukes.
  • Environmental Modifications: The group explored sustainable approaches to modifying the local environment to minimize disease risks.

The purpose of this visit was to explore the latest innovations in medical technology to advance the university’s Medical Hub project, which aims to become the one of the most advanced healthcare and treatment facility in Thailand, enhancing healthcare services nationwide.

MEDICA, the world’s largest and most influential medical technology fair, brought together global leaders, researchers, and innovators to showcase advancements across robotics, diagnostics, imaging, and health monitoring. These technologies are pivotal for Khon Kaen University’s Medical Hub project, which includes plans to increase the university hospital to a capacity of 2,000 beds — among the largest university hospital in Thailand.

Strengthening Global Medical Research and Innovation: The Visit of Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine to Heidelberg University

 

Heidelberg, Germany – November 8, 2024 – In a significant step toward advancing global health solutions, the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University visited Heidelberg University to collaborate on groundbreaking research projects aimed at addressing global health challenges, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Pantongviriyakul, the President of Khon Kaen University, and Ambassador Surapon Petch-vra, the delegation included key executives and researchers from Khon Kaen University, such as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Pope Kosalaraksa, Director of the Clinical Research Management Unit, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirirat Anutrakulchai, Vice Dean for Research and Innovation. The visit aimed to foster collaboration in medical research and innovations to tackle pressing health issues on a global scale.

 

 

Dr. Christine Neumann, an executive from Heidelberg University, welcomed the delegation and presented key research initiatives, including the PANDA (Preventing Pandemic Risk by Improving Pandemic Literacy Among Communities at the Frontline of Disease Emergence in Southeast Asia) and PANDASIA (Pandemic Literacy and Viral Zoonotic Spillover Risk at the Frontline of Disease Emergence in Southeast Asia to Improve Pandemic Preparedness) projects. Both initiatives focus on preparing Southeast Asia for future pandemics, emphasizing the region’s ongoing challenges with infectious diseases.

The PANDA project aims to enhance community knowledge in pandemic prevention, particularly in Southeast Asia, while the PANDASIA project focuses on improving medical preparedness for zoonotic diseases and mitigating the impact of environmental contaminants, such as plastics and heavy metals, which pose a serious health risk, especially to children.

During the visit, Professor Joachim RocklÃķv, an expert in climate change and health, provided valuable insights into the health impacts of pollution and global warming, particularly for children living in high-risk areas.

In addition to the research discussions, the Khon Kaen University delegation presented their own significant research findings. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pattarapong Makarawate shared research on Brugada Syndrome, a heart condition prevalent in Asia, focusing on its causes and potential treatments to reduce mortality rates in Thailand. Prof. Dr. Pope Kosalaraksa presented work on the development of a vaccine to combat dengue fever, a major health issue in Thailand, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirirat Anutrakulchai shared findings on the health impacts of PM2.5 particulate matter and its connection to chronic kidney disease in Thailand.

The delegation also met with Prof. Dr. Till BÃĪrnighausen, Director of the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health, to discuss collaboration opportunities in health economics research, which will support global health policy development.

As part of their visit, the Khon Kaen University team toured the Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany’s largest pediatric hospital, and gained insights into advanced genetic and congenital heart disease treatments, including the use of gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy.

This visit highlights Khon Kaen University’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing medical research to tackle global health challenges, laying the foundation for sustainable, innovative solutions in the years to come.

KKU’s AI For Hip Fracture Detection Research Team Wins Regional Championship and Prepares for National Competition

 

On July 16, 2024, the research team that won the Innovation Award 2024 presented their first-place award to Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, MD, KKU President, in honor and recognition of the university’s achievements in research and innovation.

Recently, the AI For Hip Fracture Detection research team from Khon Kaen University won the regional championship in the Commercial Innovation category at the Innovation Award 2024 presented by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. Their work featured an artificial intelligence system capable of detecting hip fractures from X-ray images with high accuracy. This AI technology has the potential to revolutionize the medical field and patient care.

 

 

The research team, led by Asst. Prof. Prin Tawinpraiand and Dr. Nattapon Tawinprai, KKU Faculty of Medicine, collaborated with the research team from the KKU Faculty of Engineering, led by Assoc. Prof. Puripong Suthisopapan. They developed an AI model that can accurately detect hip fractures from X-ray images and was recognized by the judging panel as highly creative and beneficial for medicine.

This award not only honors the research team and Khon Kaen University but also opens opportunities to apply this technology in the medical field across the Asia region. The research team is currently piloting the AI system at Srinagarind Hospital to test its effectiveness and refine it for use in other healthcare facilities.
