Faculty History


Professor Pimol Konkij first proposed founding a Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University to the University Council of Thailand in 1968.  The Council agreed and established a committee to oversee the logistics with assistance from the Government of Israel, which sent five experts to help create the Master Plan for KKU’s Health Sciences Center.

The Council gave assent to the founding framework of the Health Sciences Center.  Then on December 27, 1971, the Council sent the Master Plan to Cabinet for approval, which it did.  The Office of the National Economics and Social Development Board included this plan in the 3rd National Economics and Social Development Plan (1972-1976). 

August 4, 1972, the Executive Committee of the National Education Council approved the founding of the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.  On September 9, 1972, the Faculty was officially announced.  Professor Kawee Tungsubutra (MD) was appointed the first Dean of the Faculty and Director of the Health Sciences Center. 

In 1974, the Faculty enrolled its first sixteen medical students.  They commenced studies at the Faculty of Sciences and Arts.  Then in 1975, intake rose to 44 students. 

University hospital

Khon Kaen University proposed that the Cabinet approve a proposal from the New Zealand Government to design and build a hospital and Faculty complex.  On 1975, Khon Kaen University Hospital opened its Out-patient Department at a Temporary Building and Associate Professor Nopadol Tongsopit (MD) was appointed Hospital Director. 

Hospital construction

Khon Kaen University Hospital began construction on October 1975.  The hospital was designed by Llewelyn-Davies Weeks Forester-Walkers and Bor. Company, United Kingdom.  Kingston Reynolds Thom & Allardice Limited (KRTA) Company, New Zealand oversaw the construction and provided drawings for a Blood Transfusion Center. 
February 19, 1976, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej placed the foundation stone for the new hospital.  Hospital and named it “Srinagarind Hospital” in honor of Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother.  Srinagarind Hospital completed and opened in 1978.

HRH the Crown Prince placed the foundation stone for “Golden Jubilee Building” for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation

Princess Mother Memorial Building completed and opened by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn

December 25, 2008

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhon visited Srinagarind Hospital to view an exhibition of research conducted by the Faculty staff and poster presentations on hospital medical service activities.  Accompanied by members of the International Committee of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, HRH also reviewed research from other Faculties of Khon Kaen University.


With abundant kindness and grace, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over Srinagarind Day November 10th, 2008.
