SHANGHAI, China, August 27, 2026 — Mr. Surapon Petch-vra, Vice Chairman of the Khon Kaen University Council, together with Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, MD, President of Khon Kaen University, and Prof. Pewpan Maleewong, MD, Vice President for Research, led a delegation of Khon Kaen University (KKU) administrators and researchers, joined by Dr. Sura Wisedsak, Deputy Director of the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), on a visit to the Human Phenome Institute, Fudan University. The visit included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and discussions on academic and research collaboration in phenomics, bioinformatics and precision medicine. Ms. Tachaphorn Suntrajarn, Consul-General of Thailand in Shanghai, attended the signing ceremony as a witness. Representing the three institutions at the MoU signing were Prof. Binzhi QIAN, Deputy Director of the Human Phenome Institute, Fudan University; Asst. Prof. Jutarop Phetcharaburanin, Director of the National Phenome Institute, Khon Kaen University; and Assoc. Prof. Warachaya Phanphruk, MD, Assistant Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.
The partnership brings together the expertise of three institutions: the Human Phenome Institute, Fudan University; the National Phenome Institute, Khon Kaen University; and the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. Fudan University’s expertise in human phenomics and research technologies will be combined with National Phenome Institute’s capabilities in integrated phenomics and multi-omics and the Faculty of Medicine’s medical data and clinical research expertise. The collaboration will examine links among biological characteristics, genetics, environmental factors, health and disease, with the aim of applying the findings to precision medicine tailored to the Thai population.
Mr. Surapon Petch-vra, Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, MD, Prof. Pewpan Maleewong, MD, and Dr. Sura Wisedsak, led the KKU delegation in discussions with Prof. Binzhi QIAN, Prof. Xudong WANG, Prof. Huiru TANG and Dr. Ying YU, along with researchers and specialists from the Human Phenome Institute. Discussions covered human phenomics, multi-omics, bioinformatics, data governance and biobanking, as well as the Thai Human Phenome Atlas Project. The project aims to build a database and body of knowledge on the human phenome of the Thai population and examine factors associated with health and disease. The official program included dedicated sessions on data governance and biobanking, high-quality omics data generation and the Thai Human Phenome Atlas Project.
The two sides also discussed how research knowledge, data and technologies could be applied to Thailand’s health system, including disease prevention, more precise diagnosis and more effective treatment, with the goal of translating scientific advances into better health outcomes for the public.
Mr. Surapon Petch-vra, Vice Chairman of the Khon Kaen University Council, said the signing marked an important step in connecting KKU with the international human phenomics research network, giving the university’s researchers opportunities to work with leading researchers and further develop KKU’s research capabilities.
“The partnership will help turn medical knowledge and innovation into practical benefits for people’s health and quality of life,” Mr. Petch-vra said.

The Human Phenome Institute, Fudan University, is a leading Chinese research institute in human phenomics and a key contributor to the International Human Phenome Project (IHPP), an international research initiative aimed at mapping the human phenome and examining the relationships among genetics, environment, health and disease. The work seeks to improve understanding of disease mechanisms and support the development of precision medicine through collaboration among research institutions in several countries.
KKU’s collaboration with the Human Phenome Institute began with a visit to the institute in December 2024 led by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, MD, President of Khon Kaen University, together with KKU administrators and researchers. The two sides discussed combining their respective strengths in phenomics to develop joint research and continued their collaboration through academic and research activities, leading to the signing of the MoU in Shanghai.

นายสุรพล เพชรวรา รศ. นพ. ชาญชัย พานทองวิริยะกุล และ ศ. พญ. ผิวพรรณ มาลีวงษ์ พร้อมด้วย นพ. สุระ วิเศษศักดิ์ ได้นำคณะผู้บริหารและนักวิจัยจากมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น หารือกับ Prof. Binzhi Qian พร้อมด้วย Prof. Xudong Wang, Prof. Huiru Tang และ Dr. Ying Yu นักวิจัยและผู้เชี่ยวชาญของสถาบัน ในการพัฒนางานวิจัยร่วมด้าน Human Phenomics, Multi-omics, Bioinformatics, Data Governance และ Biobank รวมถึงโครงการ Thai Human Phenome Atlas เพื่อสร้างฐานข้อมูลและองค์ความรู้ด้าน Human Phenome ของประชากรไทย และศึกษาปัจจัยที่สัมพันธ์กับสุขภาพและการเกิดโรค นอกจากนี้ ยังได้หารือถึงการนำองค์ความรู้ ข้อมูล และเทคโนโลยีจากงานวิจัย ไปต่อยอดสู่การพัฒนาระบบสุขภาพของประเทศ ตั้งแต่การป้องกันโรค การวินิจฉัยที่แม่นยำ ไปจนถึงการรักษาที่มีประสิทธิภาพยิ่งขึ้น เพื่อให้ความก้าวหน้าทางวิทยาศาสตร์นำไปสู่ผลลัพธ์ทางสุขภาพที่ดีขึ้นของประชาชน
นายสุรพล เพชรวรา อุปนายกสภามหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น กล่าวว่า การลงนามครั้งนี้เป็นก้าวสำคัญในการเชื่อมมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นสู่เครือข่ายการวิจัยด้าน Human Phenomics ระดับนานาชาติ เปิดโอกาสให้นักวิจัยของมหาวิทยาลัยได้ทำงานร่วมกับนักวิจัยชั้นนำ และยกระดับศักยภาพการวิจัยของมหาวิทยาลัย เพื่อนำองค์ความรู้และนวัตกรรมทางการแพทย์ไปต่อยอดให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อสุขภาพและคุณภาพชีวิตของประชาชน

ความร่วมมือกับมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นเริ่มจากการเยือน Human Phenome Institute เมื่อเดือนธันวาคม 2567 นำโดย รศ.ชาญชัย พานทองวิริยะกุล อธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น พร้อมคณะผู้บริหารและนักวิจัย โดยทั้งสองฝ่ายได้หารือถึงการนำศักยภาพด้านฟีโนมิกส์ของแต่ละสถาบันมาพัฒนางานวิจัยร่วมกัน และ สานต่อความร่วมมือผ่านกิจกรรมทางวิชาการและการวิจัยอย่างต่อเนื่อง จนนำมาสู่การลงนาม MOU ในครั้งนี้
