The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University (MDKKU) has received the 2026 ASPIRE Award for Social Accountability, placing it among just three institutions worldwide recognised this year for excellence in medical education that responds to the health needs of society.
The award was presented at AMEE 2026 in Vienna, Austria, on Aug 24, 2026, attended by medical educators, researchers, physicians and academic leaders from around the world.
Assoc. Prof Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Praew Kotruchin, Vice Dean for Student Development, accepted the award on behalf of the faculty.
The ASPIRE Award is open to institutions worldwide and assessed by an international panel of experts. In the Social Accountability category, medical schools are evaluated on how their mission and governance, medical education, research and health services respond to the needs of the populations they serve.
At MDKKU, that responsibility is embedded in both medical education and research. Students learn in university, hospital and community settings, while faculty members and researchers use health challenges facing local communities as the basis for research and the development of better approaches to healthcare.
Among the faculty’s most significant contributions is its longstanding work to combat liver fluke infection and cholangiocarcinoma, two major public health challenges in Northeast Thailand.
This work includes the Lawa Model, which engages communities in liver fluke prevention and control; the Cholangiocarcinoma Screening and Care Program (CASCAP), which supports systematic screening, diagnosis and patient care; and the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute (CARI), which conducts research and develops innovations for disease treatment and control. These efforts have played an important role in supporting Thailand’s national policy, “Thailand Free from Liver Fluke – No Death from Cholangiocarcinoma.”
The faculty’s work in medical education, research and community health formed a key part of its submission for the 2026 ASPIRE Award. The application brought together evidence of work carried out across the faculty and was prepared and submitted by a team of academic leaders, educators and researchers:

Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, said the award was an important achievement for MDKKU and the result of the collective efforts of its faculty members, staff, students and partners.
“We have always believed that the role of a medical school goes beyond educating knowledgeable and capable doctors. Medical education, research and medical expertise must also be used to address the major health needs of the people and bring meaningful benefits to society,” he said.

คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ขึ้นรับ ASPIRE Award 2026 สาขา Social Accountability ในการประชุม AMEE 2026 เมื่อวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม 2569 ณ กรุงเวียนนา สาธารณรัฐออสเตรีย โดย รศ. นพ. ภัทรพงษ์ มกรเวส คณบดีคณะแพทยศาสตร์ และ ศ. พญ. แพรว โคตรุฉิน รองคณบดีฝ่ายพัฒนานักศึกษา เป็นผู้แทนรับรางวัล ท่ามกลางนักการศึกษา นักวิจัย แพทย์ และผู้นำด้านการศึกษาจากนานาประเทศ
คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. ได้รับคัดเลือกเป็น 1 ใน 3 สถาบันของโลกที่ได้รับ ASPIRE Award 2026 สาขา Social Accountability หลังผ่านการประเมินจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญนานาชาติ โดยรางวัลนี้เปิดรับสถาบันจากทั่วโลก และพิจารณาบทบาทของโรงเรียนแพทย์ที่มีต่อสังคมอย่างรอบด้าน ตั้งแต่พันธกิจและการบริหารองค์กร การคัดเลือกและผลิตแพทย์ งานวิจัยที่มุ่งแก้ปัญหาสุขภาพของชุมชน ไปจนถึงบริการสุขภาพที่ช่วยยกระดับคุณภาพชีวิตของประชาชน
คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. มุ่งผลิตแพทย์ที่มีความเป็นเลิศทั้งด้านวิชาการและวิชาชีพ ควบคู่กับความรับผิดชอบต่อสังคม นักศึกษาได้เรียนรู้ทั้งในมหาวิทยาลัย โรงพยาบาล และชุมชน ขณะที่คณาจารย์และนักวิจัยนำปัญหาสุขภาพของพื้นที่มาเป็นโจทย์ในการศึกษาและวิจัย เพื่อนำองค์ความรู้ไปพัฒนาการดูแลสุขภาพและสร้างประโยชน์แก่ประชาชน
หนึ่งในผลงานสำคัญของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น คือการต่อสู้และแก้ปัญหาพยาธิใบไม้ตับและมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี ซึ่งเป็นปัญหาสาธารณสุขสำคัญของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ โดยมีการดำเนินงานหลักผ่าน 3 กลไกสำคัญ ได้แก่ การจัดตั้ง “ละว้าโมเดล” (Lawa Model) ต้นแบบการป้องกันและควบคุมพยาธิใบไม้ตับที่เน้นการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชน, โครงการแก้ไขปัญหามะเร็งท่อน้ำดี (CASCAP) เพื่อการตรวจคัดกรอง ตรวจวินิจฉัย และบริหารจัดการผู้ป่วยโรคมะเร็งท่อน้ำดีและพยาธิใบไม้ตับอย่างเป็นระบบ, และการดำเนินงานของ สถาบันวิจัยมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี (CARI) ที่มุ่งเน้นการวิจัยและพัฒนานวัตกรรมในการรักษาและควบคุมโรค ซึ่งผลงานเหล่านี้ล้วนมีส่วนสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนนโยบายประเทศ “ไทยปลอดโรคพยาธิใบไม้ตับ-ไม่ตายจากมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี”
ผลงานด้านการศึกษา การวิจัย และการทำงานเพื่อสุขภาพของประชาชนที่คณะฯ ดำเนินมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง เป็นส่วนสำคัญของผลงานที่นำเสนอต่อ ASPIRE Award 2026 สาขา Social Accountability โดยคณาจารย์ นักวิจัย และผู้บริหารที่มีบทบาทในงานด้านต่าง ๆ ของคณะฯ ได้ร่วมกันรวบรวมข้อมูล จัดทำ และยื่นผลงานเพื่อรับการประเมิน ได้แก่

รศ. ภัทรพงษ์ มกรเวส คณบดีคณะแพทยศาสตร์ กล่าวว่า “การได้รับรางวัลครั้งนี้เป็นความสำเร็จที่สำคัญของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น และเป็นผลจากการทำงานร่วมกันของคณาจารย์ บุคลากร นักศึกษา และเครือข่าย สิ่งที่เรายึดถือมาโดยตลอดคือ โรงเรียนแพทย์ไม่ได้มีหน้าที่เพียงผลิตแพทย์ที่มีความรู้และความสามารถ แต่ต้องนำการศึกษา งานวิจัย และความเชี่ยวชาญทางการแพทย์ไปตอบปัญหาสุขภาพที่สำคัญของประชาชน และสร้างประโยชน์ให้กับสังคม”
