The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University (MDKKU) has welcomed two elite undergraduate scholars from the United States for an intensive five-week international research and public health internship. The arriving scholars are Ms. Grace Crawford, a third-year pre-medicine biology student from the University of North Dakota, and Ms. Chelsie Previlon, a fourth-year biochemistry student and prestigious McNair Scholar from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Running from June 22 to July 24, 2026, the comprehensive program is designed to integrate frontline community healthcare with advanced molecular oncology. To ensure effective cultural and professional integration, both students spent early June undertaking preparatory immersion courses in foundational Thai language and the Thai healthcare framework.
At the Department of Community Medicine, Family Medicine, and Occupational Medicine, Ms. Crawford is undertaking a strictly clinical observational internship under the supervision of Professor Sauwanan Bumrerraj. Her curriculum focuses extensively on geriatric care and community-driven healthcare strategies in an aging society. Her core activities include observing clinical workflows and screening protocols within specialized elderly clinics, collaborating with local multidisciplinary teams on public health road trips, and acting as a teaching assistant for medical English sessions with hospital staff. Bridging healthcare and innovation, she is also actively engaging in health education gamification to design interactive learning media for rural elderly communities.
Concurrently, at the Department of Biochemistry laboratories, Ms. Previlon is executing an advanced molecular research project titled “Anti-cancer effects of Nordamnacanthal and Morindone, natural compounds isolated from Morinda talmyi, on lung adenocarcinoma”. Operating under the direct mentorship of Associate Professor Charupong Saengboonmee, her laboratory responsibilities investigate how these natural plant-based compounds regulate lung cancer cell cycles and trigger apoptosis. Ms. Previlon’s intensive regime utilizes high-level scientific workflows, including flow cytometry for double-staining cell apoptosis determination and Western blots to map intracellular signaling pathways and analyze pro- and anti-apoptotic protein expressions. Her tenure mandates active participation in key institutional forums, including the Medical Biochemistry Seminar, the Frontiers in Research Group Meeting, and regular lab group sessions.
This international partnership serves as a crucial milestone in MDKKU’s “Internationalization Transformation” strategy. By opening its doors to top-tier global talent, the university continues to establish itself as a prominent hub where robust community health mechanisms and advanced tertiary medical research converge to address global healthcare challenges.

คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เดินหน้าขับเคลื่อนยุทธศาสตร์การพัฒนาสู่ความเป็นนานาชาติอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยได้ตอบรับ Ms. Grace Crawford นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 3 จาก University of North Dakota และ Ms. Chelsie Previlon นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 4 ดีกรีนักเรียนทุน McNair Scholar จาก University of Nevada, Reno ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เข้าฝึกประสบการณ์วิชาชีพเต็มเวลา (Full-time Internship) เป็นระยะเวลา 5 สัปดาห์ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 22 มิถุนายน ถึง 24 กรกฎาคม 2569 ซึ่งก่อนการเข้าฝึกปฏิบัติงานในสาขาวิชา นักศึกษาทั้งสองรายได้รับการเตรียมความพร้อมด้านรากฐานทางวิชาการและวัฒนธรรมผ่านรายวิชา Healthcare in Thailand และหลักสูตรภาษาไทยในช่วงต้นเดือนมิถุนายน เพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจในระบบสาธารณสุขบริบทไทยและสามารถปรับตัวเข้ากับการทำงานได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
สำหรับ Ms. Grace Crawford นักศึกษา pre-medicine สายตรง ได้เข้าฝึกงาน ณ สาขาวิชาเวชศาสตร์ชุมชน เวชศาสตร์ครอบครัว และอาชีวเวชศาสตร์ ภายใต้การดูแลของ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.แพทย์หญิงเสาวนันท์ บำเรอราช โดยกำหนดการปฏิบัติงานในฐานะผู้สังเกตการณ์ทางคลินิก (Observership) ในครั้งนี้ ได้รับการออกแบบให้ลงลึกไปในมิติการรับมือสังคมสูงวัยอย่างมีส่วนร่วม ซึ่งมีกิจกรรมสำคัญครอบคลุมการเข้าสังเกตการณ์ระบบการดูแลรักษาผู้สูงอายุ ณ คลินิกผู้สูงอายุ (Elderly Clinic) เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการคัดกรองและการดูแลผู้ป่วยสูงวัยแบบบูรณาการ การร่วมกิจกรรมระดมสมองและออกแบบพัฒนาสื่อการเรียนรู้ในรูปแบบเกม (Health Education Game Development) เพื่อนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการส่งเสริมสุขภาพผู้สูงอายุในชุมชน การเข้าร่วมเป็นผู้ช่วยสอน (TA) ในรายวิชาภาษาอังกฤษสำหรับบุคลากรทางการแพทย์ (Medical English) เพื่อสร้างการแลกเปลี่ยนทางภาษาร่วมกับบุคลากรของคณะฯ ตลอดจนการร่วมเดินทางลงพื้นที่ภาคสนาม (Tentative Road Trip) เพื่อศึกษาการทำงานสาธารณสุขเชิงรุกในระดับชุมชนร่วมกับทีมสหวิชาชีพ โดยการฝึกงานในส่วนของสาขาวิชาเวชศาสตร์ชุมชนนี้
ด้าน Ms. Chelsie Previlon ได้เข้าฝึกปฏิบัติงาน ณ ห้องปฏิบัติการสาขาวิชาชีวเคมี ชั้น 4 อาคารเวชวิชชาคาร เพื่อทำโครงงานวิจัยเรื่อง “Anti-cancer effects for Nordamnacanthal and Morindone, natural compounds isolated from Morinda talmyi, on lung adenocarcinoma” ซึ่งเป็นการศึกษาฤทธิ์ต้านเซลล์มะเร็งปอดจากสารสกัดธรรมชาติพืชสมุนไพรท้องถิ่น ภายใต้การดูแลของ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.นายแพทย์จารุพงศ์ แสงบุญมี ตลอดหลักสูตรเข้มข้นนี้ Ms. Chelsie จะได้ลงมือปฏิบัติและศึกษาเทคโนโลยีชีวโมเลกุลระดับสูง ทั้งการตรวจสอบกระบวนการตายของเซลล์มะเร็งปอดหลังได้รับสารสกัดด้วยเทคนิค Flow Cytometry (Annexin V/Propidium iodide double staining) ปฏิบัติการแยกและวิเคราะห์โปรตีน pro- และ anti-apoptotic รวมถึงการแสดงออกของโปรตีนในระบบสัญญาณส่งต่อภายในเซลล์ (Intracellular Signaling Pathways) ด้วยเทคนิค Western Blots พร้อมทั้งเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมทางวิชาการภาคบังคับ ทั้งงานสัมมนา Medical Biochemistry Seminar, Frontiers in Research Group Meeting และ Saengboonmee Lab Meeting
การต้อนรับนักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยนทุนเรียนดีจากประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาในครั้งนี้ นับเป็นฟันเฟืองชิ้นสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนยุทธศาสตร์การพัฒนาคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น สู่ความเป็นนานาชาติ (Internationalization Transformation) ผ่านการเปิดพื้นที่แบ่งปันนวัตกรรมการวิจัยทางการแพทย์ระดับตติยภูมิ และกลไกสาธารณสุขชุมชนที่เข้มแข็งสู่เวทีโลกอย่างยั่งยืน
