Japanese Medical Students Immerse Themselves in Tropical Medicine and Thai Culture at Khon Kaen University

 

Sixteen Japanese medical and radiological technology students from four of Japan’s leading medical universities have embarked on an intensive four-week Clinical Elective Program at Khon Kaen University (KKU), offering them a rare and profound window into the world of tropical medicine and Thailand’s public healthcare system.

The program, held from 3–28 March 2025 at KKU’s Faculty of Medicine, welcomed students from Aichi Medical University, Fujita Health University, Wakayama Medical University, and Gifu University. It offered a hands-on learning experience across a broad range of disciplines — from general surgery, pediatric surgery, family medicine, and community medicine to emergency medicine, rehabilitation, and radiological techniques.

 

 

Through daily clinical rotations at Srinagarind Hospital and outreach in surrounding communities, the visiting students observed surgeries, joined ward rounds, assisted in outpatient clinics, and participated in home visits, gaining insight into Thailand’s tiered public health infrastructure — from primary to tertiary care.

But the program wasn’t only about clinical training. Culture took center stage as well — in between scalpels and stethoscopes, the students folded delicate flowers from pandan leaves alongside their Thai peers, learning the symbolism of fragrance and mindfulness in Thai tradition. In return, they shared the Japanese art of origami, crafting intricate paper shapes that filled the room with laughter and admiration.

These quiet moments of cultural exchange brought warmth and perspective to a rigorous academic journey.

 

 

The elective reflects Thailand’s growing role as a regional hub for global medical exchange and its commitment to academic diplomacy. For the Japanese students, many of whom will return to high-tech medical institutions in their homeland, the experience has offered a unique perspective on resourceful, community-driven healthcare models.

As the final week approaches, friendships have flourished, futures have been reshaped, and the seeds of long-term collaboration between Thailand and Japan have been sown.

Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine has warmly welcomed a group of Japanese medical and radiologic technology students from four prestigious institutions: Aichi Medical University, Fujita Health University, Wakayama Medical University, and Gifu University. These students are set to engage in clinical training at Srinagarind Hospital between March 3 and March 28, 2025.

Third-Year Residents from Lithuania and Lao PDR Complete Elective Exchange Program at Khon Kaen University

 

The Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, is committed to promoting continuous medical education by welcoming residents from the Republic of Lithuania and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) to participate in the Elective Exchange Program from February 3 to 28, 2025. This program provides an excellent opportunity to foster international medical collaboration.

 

 

For the Department of Surgery, the Faculty of Medicine welcomed Dr. Gabriele Pleiryte, a third-year neurology resident from Vilnius University, to participate in a clinical observation at the Neurosurgery Unit from February 4 to 27, 2025. During this period, Dr. Gabriele Pleiryte had the opportunity to observe and learn about medical practices in neurosurgery, including:

  1. Studying techniques and methods of neurosurgical procedures in various specialties, such as brain and spinal cord surgeries.
  2. Learning about postoperative care for neurosurgical patients.
  3. Participating in academic conferences and medical training sessions related to neurosurgery.
  4. Collaborating with the medical team in the Department of Neurosurgery to enhance knowledge and experience in patient care.

 

 

For the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine welcomed
Dr. Teenaphark Phanthavong, a third-year resident from the University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR, to participate in a clinical observation at the Emergency Medicine Unit from February 3 to 28, 2025. During this clinical observation, Dr. Teenaphark Phanthavong had the opportunity to learn about emergency medicine (EM) and emergency medical services (EMS) systems, focusing on key areas, including:

  1. Emergency patient care: Learning the processes of assessing and managing emergency patients from initial reception to primary treatment, including the use of life-saving equipment such as CPR and AED.
  2. Critical patient management: Studying methods for managing critically ill patients in various conditions, such as trauma, shock, and medical emergencies requiring urgent care.
  3. EMS training: Learning about teamwork between medical professionals, nurses, and EMS staff in the care of emergency patients from the scene to the hospital.
  4. Observing in the emergency medicine department: Attending internal department meetings, improving and refining processes in emergency medicine, and exchanging experiences and opinions on patient care through both theoretical and practical learning.

The welcoming of international residents in this exchange program strengthens international medical collaboration and provides a valuable opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, and medical institutions in the Republic of Lithuania and the Lao PDR. Furthermore, the clinical observation and training in various specialties enhance the skills and expertise of the residents from both countries in patient care and effective medical service delivery.

Japanese Nursing Students from Chiba University Visit Srinagarind Hospital for International Learning Exchange

 

The Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, recently welcomed nursing students from Chiba University, Japan, for a two-day academic visit to Srinagarind Hospital from February 19 to 20, 2025. This immersive experience allowed the students to gain practical insights into Thailand’s healthcare system under the guidance of seasoned medical professionals.

During their visit, Ms. Matsuri Sakimoto, Ms. Sayo Itsuka, and Ms. Towa Kobayashi explored key healthcare units to broaden their understanding of nursing practices in Thailand. On their first day, they observed operations at the Primary Care Unit at Sam Liam, where they learned about community-based healthcare services, Thailand’s preventive healthcare model, and patient-centered care approaches. This exposure provided them with a deeper appreciation of Thailand’s public health strategies and grassroots medical outreach initiatives.

The second day of the program focused on maternal and neonatal care at the Maternity and Delivery Unit. The students had the opportunity to witness advanced medical technologies used in labor and delivery and gained firsthand experience in prenatal and postnatal care strategies adopted in Thai hospitals. This experience highlighted the comprehensive approach to maternal health practiced in Thailand, blending modern medical advancements with compassionate patient care.

This exchange program is part of the ongoing collaboration between Chiba University and Khon Kaen University, fostering knowledge-sharing, cross-cultural learning, and professional development among nursing students. By actively engaging in practical experiences, the students not only enhanced their medical expertise but also contributed to strengthening Japan-Thailand relations in healthcare education.
