A high-level delegation from Khon Kaen University (KKU), led by the Chairman of the University Council, visited the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases (RIMD) at Osaka University, Japan, to exchange advanced medical knowledge, explore world-class research innovations, and foster long-term collaboration in biomedical research and human resource development between two of Asia’s leading universities in medicine and health sciences.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Shota Nakamura from the Department of Infection Metagenomics, Genome Information Research Center, and his research team and students, who introduced RIMD’s groundbreaking research and technological advancements. The visit focused particularly on Metagenomics, a field that plays a pivotal role in understanding microbial pathogens, developing next-generation vaccines, and enhancing infectious disease diagnostics with greater precision.

Collaborative Research to Shape the Future of Medicine

During the visit, Assoc. Prof. Supranee Phanthanawiboon presented a joint research project between the Faculty of Medicine, KKU, and RIMD titled “Metagenomic NTM Diagnosis Service Prototype for Enhanced Diagnostic and Treatment Outcomes.” The project aims to develop a prototype diagnostic system for Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) using Metagenomic Analysis, enabling faster and more accurate diagnosis to improve patient treatment outcomes. This collaborative project is supported by the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI) of Thailand, with a research grant of over 2.3 million THB, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supranee Punthtanvibul from KKU and Prof. Shota Nakamura from RIMD.

Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Atibordee Meesing, Deputy Director of Srinagarind Hospital, shared insights on KKU Faculty of Medicine’s strong capabilities in medical services, research, and infectious disease management. He emphasized that collaboration with RIMD will drive innovation in combating emerging infectious diseases and promote health security across the region.

In his remarks, Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee, Chairman of the Khon Kaen University Council, stated: “RIMD stands as one of the world’s leading research institutions, whose contributions have profoundly benefited humanity. Khon Kaen University is ready to support and continue this meaningful collaboration to create new knowledge that enhances health and well-being in Thailand, Japan, and the global community.”

Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, added: “This visit goes beyond academic exchange—it lays the foundation for a deep, enduring partnership that will elevate our research to global impact, particularly in diagnostics, therapeutics, and the development of new generations of medical researchers.”

Founded in 1934, the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases (RIMD) is Osaka University’s first research institute and a global leader in microbiology, immunology, and oncology. RIMD has made pioneering contributions to identifying new pathogens, elucidating microbial mechanisms, and developing vaccines and diagnostics that have significantly advanced public health worldwide.

วิจัยร่วมเพื่อสร้างอนาคตการแพทย์ยุคใหม่

ในการเยือนครั้งนี้ รศ. สุปราณี พันธุ์ธนวิบูลย์ สาขาวิชาจุลชีววิทยา คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ได้บรรยายถึงความร่วมมือด้านการวิจัยระหว่างสองสถาบันในหัวข้อ “Metagenomic NTM Diagnosis Service Prototype for Enhanced Diagnostic and Treatment Outcomes” ซึ่งเป็นโครงการวิจัยร่วมที่มุ่งพัฒนาต้นแบบระบบตรวจวินิจฉัยเชื้อ NTM (Nontuberculous Mycobacteria) ด้วยเทคนิค Metagenomic Analysis เพื่อให้แพทย์สามารถวินิจฉัยและรักษาผู้ป่วยได้อย่างรวดเร็วและแม่นยำยิ่งขึ้น โดยโครงการนี้ได้รับทุนสนับสนุนจากสถาบันวิจัยระบบสาธารณสุข (HSRI) ด้วยงบประมาณกว่า 2.3 ล้านบาท โดยมี รศ. สุปราณี พันธุ์ธนวิบูลย์ เป็นหัวหน้าโครงการฝ่ายไทย และ Prof. Shota Nakamura เป็นหัวหน้าโครงการฝ่ายญี่ปุ่น

ขณะเดียวกัน ผศ. อธิบดี มีสิงห์ รองผู้อำนวยการโรงพยาบาลศรีนครินทร์ ได้บรรยายถึงศักยภาพของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น ในการให้บริการทางการแพทย์ งานวิจัย และการจัดการโรคติดเชื้ออย่างเป็นระบบ ซึ่งเปิดประตูสู่ความร่วมมือกับ RIMD ในการสร้างองค์ความรู้ใหม่เพื่อรับมือโรคอุบัติใหม่ในอนาคต

ผู้นำทั้งสองสถาบันร่วมผลักดันวิสัยทัศน์

ดร.ณรงค์ชัย อัครเศรณี นายกสภามหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น กล่าวว่า “RIMD คือแหล่งวิจัยระดับโลกที่สร้างประโยชน์ต่อมวลมนุษยชาติอย่างแท้จริง มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นพร้อมสนับสนุนและสานต่อความร่วมมือนี้อย่างเต็มที่ เพื่อสร้างองค์ความรู้ใหม่ที่จะยกระดับสุขภาพของประชาชนไทย ญี่ปุ่น และสังคมโลก”

ด้าน รศ.นพ.ภัทรพงศ์ มกรเวส คณบดีคณะแพทยศาสตร์ กล่าวเสริมว่า “การเยือน RIMD ในครั้งนี้เป็นมากกว่าการแลกเปลี่ยนทางวิชาการ แต่คือการวางรากฐานความร่วมมือเชิงลึกที่จะยกระดับคุณภาพงานวิจัยของเราให้มีผลกระทบในระดับนานาชาติ ทั้งในด้านการวินิจฉัย การรักษา และการพัฒนานักวิจัยรุ่นใหม่ของภูมิภาค”

RIMD: พลังแห่งการวิจัยเพื่ออนาคตมนุษยชาติ

Research Institute for Microbial Diseases (RIMD) ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2477 ถือเป็นสถาบันวิจัยแห่งแรกของมหาวิทยาลัยโอซากา และเป็นผู้นำระดับโลกในการศึกษาด้านจุลชีววิทยา ภูมิคุ้มกันวิทยา และมะเร็งวิทยา RIMD มีโครงสร้างการวิจัยขนาดใหญ่ ครอบคลุม 4 หน่วยหลัก ได้แก่
