The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University (MDKKU) has reinforced its standing as a global hub for tropical disease research by welcoming Mr. Quentin Scarborough, a first-year medical student from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GW SMHS), Washington, D.C. Mr. Scarborough arrived on June 8, 2026, to begin a seven-week Research Exchange Program running through July 24, 2026, centering on global health epidemiology and oncology.
Enrolled in GW SMHS’s prestigious Global Health Scholarly Concentration (GHSC) program, Mr. Scarborough is focusing his research on chronic liver fluke infection (Opisthorchis viverrini) and its direct etiological link to cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), a malignancy endemic to Northeastern Thailand. Throughout the exchange, he will conduct studies under the close mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sutas Sutthiprapa, Head of the Tropical Medicine Deparmtnet at MDKKU’s Tropical Disease Research Center (TDRC).
The exchange commenced with Mr. Scarborough serving as a special observer at the Japan-ASEAN Training Workshop on One Health Approaches for Neglected Tropical Disease Control (June 8–10, 2026), co-organized by MDKKU and the Japan Foundation. The international workshop convened public health specialists from six ASEAN member countries, offering a first-hand look at how the One Health framework is actively deployed to disrupt disease transmission cycles across the Mekong subregion.
Building on this academic foundation, Mr. Scarborough will transition into field-based observations to study the internationally recognized “Lawa Model.” Developed by KKU researchers, this pioneering community-led intervention integrates grassroots health education, systematic parasitological screening, and environmental management into a sustainable disease control strategy.
The research exchange underscores the long-term partnership between MDKKU and George Washington University, cultivated through the Electives Program. This collaboration not only offers transformative, real-world research experience for future global health leaders but also reinforces both institutions’ shared commitment to shaping international medical education and regional health transformation.

คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น (MDKKU) ตอกย้ำความเป็นเลิศในฐานะศูนย์กลางการวิจัยโรคเขตร้อนระดับโลก โดยเปิดบ้านต้อนรับ Mr. Quentin Scarborough นักศึกษาแพทย์ชั้นปีที่ 1 ในหลักสูตรพิเศษ Global Health Scholarly Concentration (GHSC) จาก George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GW SMHS) สหรัฐอเมริกา ในโอกาสเข้าศึกษาดูงานและทำวิจัยเชิงลึก (Research Exchange Program) เป็นระยะเวลา 7 สัปดาห์ ระหว่างวันที่ 8 มิถุนายน ถึง 24 กรกฎาคม 2569
โครงงานวิจัยของ Mr. Scarborough มุ่งเน้นการศึกษาภาวะติดเชื้อเรื้อรังจากพยาธิใบไม้ตับ (Opisthorchis viverrini) ซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญของการเกิดโรคมะเร็งท่อน้ำดี (Cholangiocarcinoma) ที่อุบัติมากในภูมิภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศไทย โดยอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลอย่างใกล้ชิดของ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สุทัศน์ สุทธิประภา หัวหน้าสาขาวิชาเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน ณ ศูนย์วิจัยโรคเขตร้อน (Tropical Disease Research Center – TDRC)
ในการเริ่มต้นโครงการแลกเปลี่ยน Mr. Scarborough ได้เข้าร่วมสังเกตการณ์พิเศษในงานประชุมเชิงปฏิบัติการระดับนานาชาติ Japan-ASEAN Training Workshop on One Health Approaches for Neglected Tropical Disease Control (จัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 8-10 มิถุนายน 2569) ซึ่งเกิดจากความร่วมมือระหว่าง คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. และ Japan Foundation กิจกรรมนี้นับเป็นเวทีสำคัญในการเปิดโลกทัศน์ร่วมกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญและบุคลากรสาธารณสุขจาก 6 ประเทศในภูมิภาคอาเซียน เพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจเชิงลึกเกี่ยวกับพลวัตการแพร่กระจายของโรคพยาธิใบไม้ตับผ่านมุมมองการบูรณาการตามแนวคิดสุขภาพหนึ่งเดียว (One Health)
นอกจากนี้ โปรแกรมการแลกเปลี่ยนยังครอบคลุมการลงพื้นที่ภาคสนาม (Field-based Observations) เพื่อศึกษา “Lawa Model” (ละว้าโมเดล) นวัตกรรมการควบคุมโรคพยาธิใบไม้ตับในชุมชนที่ได้รับการยอมรับในระดับสากล ผ่านกระบวนการคัดกรองอย่างเป็นระบบ การให้สุขศึกษา และการจัดการสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างยั่งยืน
ความร่วมมือในครั้งนี้สะท้อนถึงความสัมพันธ์อันแน่นแฟ้นในฐานะพันธมิตรทางวิชาการที่ยาวนานระหว่าง MDKKU และ George Washington University ผ่านโครงการ Electives Program ซึ่งไม่เพียงแต่เปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษาแพทย์ต่างชาติได้สัมผัสประสบการณ์วิจัยในสภาพแวดล้อมจริง แต่ยังเป็นกลไกสำคัญในการกระชับความร่วมมือเพื่อขับเคลื่อนนวัตกรรมทางการแพทย์และการสาธารณสุขในระดับสากลสืบไป
