USF Health’s Global Health Conversation series

 

All are invited to join Global Health Conversation Series by USF Health on the topic “The Merging of Two Crisis: The Impact of Covid-19 on the Global Refugee Crisis”. The Lecturer for this session is Dr. Minal Ahson. Dr. Minal Ahson is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of South Florida. She is a Med-Peds Hospitalist on The COVID-19 respond team at the Global Emerging Disease Institute at Tampa General Hospital. She has extensive experience working on humanitarian medical response around the world, with a particular focus on refugee communities in Jordan and Bangladesh. She has also directed and taught course on refugee health and humanitarian medicine at USF Morsani College of Medicine, Georgetown School of Medicine, and UC Berkeley.

KKU President presents on Global Health in Mie University online lecture series

 

On January 26, 2021, Associate Professor Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University, presented to PhD and international students at Mie University, Japan.

His lecture, on “Global Health from the Viewpoint of Thailand” gave information on Global Health from a Thailand and Khon Kaen University perspective. It also included impact of COVID-19 in Thailand, national and university policy on One Health for global health challenges and the application of disruptive technologies for global health at Khon Kaen University.

Mie University’s 2021 online lecture series runs every Tuesday with the theme of Global Health. Associate Professor Hiroyuki Sakurai, Center of Medical and Nursing Education, Mie University is the series chair. Speakers are drawn from Thailand, Japan, Tanzania, Ghana, Mexico and USA.

In 2019, President Charnchai Panthongviriyakul was also an invited speaker at the 34th annual meeting of the Japanese Association of International Health at Mie University on the topic “Education on global health in Japanese universities; views from foreign faculties”. This year’s second invitation shows his expertise in global health and the growing relationship between Khon Kaen and Mie Universities.

Open Call for student and staff training program by Alianza 4 Universidades

 

Alliance 4 Universities has been awarded funds under Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programme (Action KA107). Through these funds, students and staff from non-European partner universities and from A4U universities have the opportunity to participate in mobility schemes. The calls are open to Bachelor, Master and PhD students and staff from the participating universities. For Bachelor, Master and PhD students the mobility can be from 3 to 5 months long. For staff, 7 days are covered by the grant: 5 days for teaching (or training, or both) and 2 days for travel. Mobilities can be carried out during 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years and should end by 31 July 2023.

COP26 Trilateral Research Initiative

 

In November 2021, the UK will be hosting the 26th annual session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, or “COP26”, in Glasgow. At the summit, delegates including heads of state, climate experts, and negotiators will come together to agree on coordinated action to tackle climate change.

 

In leading up to COP26, the British Council has launched the Trilateral Research Initiative to provide an opportunity to

  • Establish new research networks and collaborations in the field of climate research between the UK, Japan, and one or more ASEAN countries or territories which are eligible for Overseas Development Assistance (ODA);
  • Develop and implement research projects which contribute to solving the existing climate change-related problems;
  • Stimulate innovative research ideas and encourage sustainable collaborations between the research partners beyond the initial funding;
  • Foster an interdisciplinary approach to climate research by bringing together early career researchers from different fields to collaborate on finding solutions to climate challenges.

Cooperation Plan between MDKKU, University of Tsukuba, Japan, and University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR

 

The Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University  co-hosted a  Signing Ceremony for a Cooperation plan for emergency services development between the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Thailand, University of Tsukuba, Japan, and University of Health Science, Laos PDR on December 21, 2020.  The ceremony was held in Meeting Room 1 (5103), 1st floor, Wechwichakarn Building, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.

The online signing ceremony  included high ranking administrators from  the 3 institutes. The University of Tsukuba, Japan, representatives were 1) Professor Nagata Kyosuke, President, 2) Professor Ohneda Osamu, Office of Global Initiatives, 3) Professor Inoue Yoshiaki , Faculty of Medicine (Emergency Medicine), 4) Professor Hiramatsu Yuji, Deputy Director, University of Tsukuba Hospital, 5) Professor Ichikawa Masao, , Department of Global Public Health, 6) Dr. Suzuki Takaak,i Deputy Chief, International Medical Center, 7) Professor Isoda Masami, Director of University of Tsukuba Khon Kaen University Office, 8) Professor Nomura Nakao, International Exchange Support Director, Global Commons, 9) Mr. Suzuki Hiroyuki, Head, Office of Global Initiatives  10) Mr. Ota Daisuke Chief, Office of Global Initiatives.

The representatives from Khon Kaen University were Associate Professor Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Services, Assistant Professor Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, Associate Professor Somsak Tiamkao, Head, Department of Emergency Medicine and Doctor Kamonwon Ienghong, Department of Emergency Medicine.

The JICA Thailand Office also participated and sent Mr. Yuasa Keiichiro, Senior Representative, and Mr. Shuchi Ikeda, JICA Expert,  to witness to the ceremony.

The signing person from each institute were Professor Nagata Kyosuke, President of University of Tsukuba, Japan, Dr. Bounthome Samountry Interim President University of Health Science, Laos PDR, and Associate Professor Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Services, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. This Letter of Intent is for the purpose of establishing cooperation plan to improve medical service, academic service, and research service between the 3 Universities in the field of emergency medicine and other related field. The improvement plan will improve the quality of emergency medical service in Southeast Asia region to the next level.

During the signing ceremony there are also special lecture by Prof. Hiramatsu Yuji, University of Tsukuba on the topic “Challenges on Medical Education under COVID-19 in Japan”, Doctor Kamonwon Ienghong, Department of Emergency Medicine, on the topic “Challenges on Medical Education under COVID-19 in Thailand”, and Professor Inoue Yoshiaki, University of Tsukuba, in the topic “Impact of COVID-19 on EMS System in Japan”. Before the end they also discuss about the plan to continue the cooperation and improvement of emergency medical service under the current situation in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

JICA Delegation visit KKU for discussions on Emergency Medicine collaboration

 

On December 21, 2020, delegates from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Thailand Office visited Khon Kaen University and the Faculty of Medicine to discuss further collaborative possibilities for capacity building the Emergency Medicine Network to support the implementation of a sustainable Emergency Care System in Lao PDR.

The JICA delegation was led by Mr. Yuasa Keiichiro, Senior Representative, and Mr. Shuchi Ikeda, JICA Expert dispatched to NIEM.  The KKU and Faculty of Medicine representatives were, Associate Professor Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Services, Assistant Professor Acharawan Topark-Ngarm, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, Associate Professor Somsak Tiamkao, Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Jutarop Phetcharaburanin, Assistant Dean for Research and International Relation Affairs. The discussions were held at Meeting Room 2 (5203), 2nd floor, Wechwichakarn Building, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.

The implementation of a sustainable Emergency Care Network in Laos PDR project is a joint project between Khon Kaen University Thailand, University of Tsukuba, Japan, and University of Health Science, Laos PDR, to improve emergency medical services in Lao PDR. The Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University is entrusted by the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and the University of Health Science, Lao PDR, to become the training center for emergency medical personal. Associate Professor Somsak Tiamkao, Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, is the project supervisor and evaluator for the Lao PDR doctors in training.  Already, 8 doctors whom have graduated from this training program in the Faculty of Medicine Khon Kaen University.

MDKKU Professors Receive National Research Council of Thailand Research Grants

 

Two  Professors from the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, had recently received support funds from the National Research Council of Thailand.

Congratulations to Dr. Jutarop Phetcharaburanin, Department of Biochemistry, and Assistant Professor Sarinya Kongpetch, Department of Pharmacology, for their  Outstanding Young Researcher Supporting Grants from the National Research Council of Thailand. The Outstanding Young Researcher Supporting Grant is a joint project between the Ministry of Education and National Research Council of Thailand to support new generation researchers  to enhance   their research and future careers.   This will help boost  high quality research  and overall education  in Thailand.
