On April 17, 2024, MD-KKU extended a heartfelt welcome to Miss Nana Ito and Miss Miyu Iwata, sixth-year medical exchange students from Mie University Graduate School of Medicine. They have joined our Department of Community, Family and Occupational Medicine for a three-week period, from April 17 to May 2, 2024.

At the start of the orientation, the International Relations Officers gave them a tour of the Samlium Primary Care Unit (SPCU), where they will do occasional observational studies. Following that, they returned to the campus for an orientation that included a brief overview of Khon Kaen University. We additionally also introduced them to several common Thai foods and some key Thai words and phrases for daily conversation. After that, we guided them to their department so they could meet with their supervisors.

Following that, they took a quick tour of some of Srinagarind Hospital’s most important locations. Then they proceeded to the canteen where they tried to buy their lunch in Thai by using phrases and words they had previously learned.

During the afternoon, we did a campus tour of important places in Khon Kaen University. We used KKU smart transit system (shuttle bus) as our main transportation in order to familiarize them with the routes and boarding procedures. The first stop was Sports Complex where we introduced them to a sports stadium, a swimming pool, and fitness centers. Next, they visited the KKU Art and Culture Center, offering insights into Thai culture through its varied collection of artworks. Consequently, we went to the KKU Natural History Museum where valuable historical and natural resources are exhibited. We finally took them to the Food and Services Center 1 (Complex) to show them the shops and services that were offered there to conclude the tour.

We hope that this first-day orientation was helpful to Miss Nana and Miss Miyu as they embark on their medical school journey at Khon Kaen University. We helped them get to know the campus, introduced them to important language skills, and showed them around key facilities, in order to make sure they feel comfortable and supported as they settle into their new surroundings and life.
